Living in Walden, Calgary: Homes, Schools, Transit and What to Expect

by Justin Warthe

Updated November 2, 2026 · Written by Justin Warthe, Team Lead, The Top Calgary Real Estate Team

Walden is the newer community at Calgary's southern edge, east of Macleod Trail between 194 Avenue and 210 Avenue SE, with Legacy to the south, Chaparral to the north and the Bow River valley to the east. Council approved the plan in 2007, Genstar launched construction in 2008, and the community now offers everything from condos to bungalow villas around a naturalized wetland. Here is what it is like to live there, what homes cost and the trade-offs to weigh before you buy.

Quick answer: Walden is a newer south Calgary community with pathways, a wetland pond and shops within walking distance, and most of its homes were built after 2010, so maintenance is light. The trade-off is distance: the nearest CTrain station is Somerset-Bridlewood by bus, and there is no school inside the community yet. The Top Calgary Real Estate Team sells across south Calgary; call or text 403-620-8746 or book a call for a Walden evaluation or buyer consultation.

Key takeaways

  • Every home in Walden was built after 2000, and 52% were built between 2016 and 2021, so this is one of the youngest housing stocks in Calgary.
  • It is a mixed community: detached houses are 56% of homes, low-rise apartments 19%, row houses 14% and semi-detached 10%, which makes it one of the few far-south communities with entry-level condos and townhomes.
  • There is no school inside Walden yet. Students are designated to Dr. Freda Miller (K to 5) and Marshall Springs (6 to 9) in Evergreen; a new Walden Elementary received design funding in February 2026.
  • The Gates of Walden retail area has grocery, restaurants and medical offices, and a larger district south of 210 Avenue has more than 65 shops, so daily errands do not require leaving the area.

Schools

There is no school inside Walden yet. In December 2019 the Calgary Board of Education designated Walden students to Dr. Freda Miller School (K to 5) and Marshall Springs School (6 to 9), both in Evergreen, with busing from September 2020, and Dr. E. P. Scarlett is the public high school. A new Walden Elementary was announced for design funding on February 27, 2026. The Calgary Catholic designations are St. Sebastian (K to 6, on Chaparral Drive SE), Father James Whelihan (7 to 9) and Bishop O'Byrne High School.

School designations change; confirm the current designation for any address with the Calgary Board of Education or the Calgary Catholic School District before you buy.

Getting around

Route 167 (Walden to Legacy) runs to Somerset-Bridlewood CTrain station on the Red Line, and Route 78 serves the 194 Avenue edge. Macleod Trail is the main road, and the completed Stoney Trail ring road improved access to the rest of the city. Downtown is roughly 30 to 35 minutes by car outside rush hour.

Parks, recreation and shopping

A naturalized wetland and clear-water pond anchor a pathway system that links to the Bow River in Chaparral Valley and to Fish Creek Provincial Park. The Gates of Walden retail area has grocery, restaurants and medical offices, and a larger district south of 210 Avenue has more than 65 shops.

The trade-offs

Walden is far south, with no LRT station and no school inside the community yet, so most trips to school and the CTrain are by bus or car. Condo and townhome buyers should review condominium fees, reserve funds and the bylaws closely before writing an offer.
