Living in Discovery Ridge, Calgary: Homes, Schools, Transit and What to Expect

Discovery Ridge is the forested valley community at Calgary's western edge, tucked beside the Elbow River and Griffith Woods Park with Stoney Trail to the north. It is one of the quietest addresses in the southwest, and one of the few where estate homes, townhomes and condos all back onto a 93-hectare natural park. Here is what it is like to live there, what homes cost and the trade-offs to weigh before you buy.

Quick answer: Discovery Ridge suits buyers who want trees, river pathways and quiet over quick errands. It is a one-road-in valley with a public K to 9 school inside the community, no shops, and a longer trip to high school and downtown. The Top Calgary Real Estate Team sells across west and southwest Calgary; call or text 403-620-8746 or book a call for a Discovery Ridge evaluation or buyer consultation.

Key takeaways

  • Discovery Ridge was built almost entirely in one wave: 83% of homes date from 2001 to 2010, so the housing stock is consistent and the maintenance profile is predictable.
  • It is a mixed community by Calgary standards: detached houses are 56% of homes, but apartment condos in buildings of five storeys or more are a surprising 33%, with townhomes and villas making up the rest.
  • Griffith Woods School (public, K to 9) opened in 2017 inside the community; public high school students are designated to Central Memorial.
  • The trade-off is access: one main road in and out, no retail inside the community and a single bus route (Route 51) to the 69 Street SW CTrain station.

Where Discovery Ridge is and how it was built

Discovery Ridge sits in the Elbow River valley at the west edge of Calgary. Stoney Trail bounds it to the north and 69 Street SW to the east; Rocky View County lies to the west and the Elbow River and Tsuut'ina Nation to the south. Building started in the late 1990s under the name New Discovery. It was first planned as a gated community, but that plan was dropped, and the community that emerged is a loop of crescents and cul-de-sacs around the park and the river.

Homes in Discovery Ridge

Detached houses make up 56% of homes and apartment condos in buildings of five storeys or more about 33%, with semi-detached and row homes together under 10%, according to the City of Calgary's 2021 census profile. Most of the community went up in a single wave: 83% of dwellings were built between 2001 and 2010. Buyers will find condos, townhomes, villas and estate homes backing onto the woods, and about 81% of households own their home.

Schools

Griffith Woods School, a public K to 9 school, opened in September 2017 to serve Discovery Ridge and Springbank Hill. For high school, the Calgary Board of Education moved Discovery Ridge students from Ernest Manning to Central Memorial starting in the 2020-21 school year. The Calgary Catholic designations commonly listed for the area are John W. Costello (elementary) and St. Michael (K to 9, with French Immersion).

School designations change; confirm the current designation for any address with the Calgary Board of Education or the Calgary Catholic School District before you buy.

Getting around

Calgary Transit Route 51 (West Springs / Discovery Ridge) connects the community to the 69 Street SW CTrain station on the Blue Line. Glenmore Trail and Stoney Trail are the main road links; downtown is roughly 20 to 25 minutes by car outside rush hour, and the ring road puts the mountains and the rest of the city within easy reach.

Parks, recreation and shopping

Griffith Woods Park is a 93-hectare natural environment park along the Elbow River, with paved paths, boardwalks over wetlands and a pond, plus soccer fields and a playground at 160 Discovery Ridge Boulevard SW. There is no retail inside the community; residents drive to West Springs or Westhills for groceries and services.

The trade-offs

Discovery Ridge is a one-road-in valley with no community association facility, and the high-school commute relies on a single morning and afternoon bus route. You trade convenience for quiet and trees. Condo buyers should review the condominium documents and reserve fund closely, since a third of the community's homes are in larger buildings.
